Messy Chocolate Orange Cake
Recipe Ingredients
Cake…
220g of self-raising flour
240g caster sugar
240g butter
80g of milk chocolate
60g of cocoa powder
6 medium eggs
3 tsp milk
2 tsp orange extract
Buttercream…
375g butter
375g icing sugar
120g milk chocolate
60g cocoa powder
2 tsp milk
1.5 tsp orange extract
Decoration…
A bag of mini Terry’s chocolate orange segments
Method
Cake…
– Pre-heat the oven to 180C, Gas 4 (160C fan-assisted ovens)
– Use butter to grease two round cake tins and then line with baking paper
– Gently melt 80g of milk chocolate in a pan and then allow to cool
– Into a mixing bowl add all the other cake ingredients and mix well
– Add the melted chocolate and mix gently some more
– Split the cake mixture evenly into the two round baking tins and bake in the centre of the oven for 35mins or until ready
– Allow to stand for 10 mins before placing them on a cooling rack
Buttercream…
– Gently melt 120g of milk chocolate in a pan and then allow to cool
– Take room temperature butter and beat it in a mixing bowl
– Add all the other buttercream ingredients to the bowl together and mix until well combined
Decoration…
– To decorate take 1/3rd of the total mix and place on the base half and then spread evenly with a palette knife
– Add the top half to the cake and then add 1/3rd of the remaining mixture to the top and spread with a palette knife
– Add 1/3rd of the remaining mixture to the sides of the cake with a palette knife
– Finally, put the final 1/3rd of the mix into a piping bag, and pipe the buttercream around the edges for bases on which the chocolate orange segments can be positioned at a nice angle
